Background & Experience
As Community Health Partnership’s Medical Director, Dr. Kent Imai works with the medical leadership of CHP’s 10 member community health centers and Santa Clara County’s health care system regarding clinical quality improvement programs. Born in San Francisco, Dr. Imai completed his undergraduate degree at Stanford University and graduated from medical school at Wayne State University in Michigan. Dr. Imai completed his internship and residency at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC), interrupting his training to serve in the US Army Medical corps during the Vietnam conflict. After completing residency training, he joined the staff at SCVMC as First Chief of the Primary Care Division in the Department of Medicine, where he directed over 60 physicians in 6 outpatient sites, the Geriatric Division and in hospital “hospitalist” program.
Before retiring after 35 years of service at SCVMC, Dr. Imai served as the President of the Medical Staff at SCVMC and as the original medical director for Valley Health Plan (VHP), Santa Clara County’s Medi-Cal managed care plan. He also helped initiate the commercial VHP which currently serves Santa Clara County employees. In 2007, following his retirement from SCVMC, and prior to coming to CHP, Dr. Imai served as the peer review and primary care practice consultant for the Federal Receiver for California prison healthcare where he was responsible for establishing primary care systems in all 33 California prisons.
In addition to medicine, Dr. Imai’s passions are for his family, including his 102 year old mother and 6 grandchildren, music, the theatre, and universal healthcare.
