Text Box: Wellness Tip
of the Month

Try Exercise Walking!

Exercise walking can benefit your physical and mental health in many ways!

A brisk walk increases your intake of oxygen, strengthens your heart to pump more blood, improves circulation, and lowers blood pressure.

Walking also slows development of degenerative joint disease, stops loss of bone mass in osteoporosis, and tones your muscles gently.

Walking reduces stress, helps you keep a positive outlook, and can help you sleep more deeply and restfully.

Planning for Improved Specialty Care Access

Community Health Partnership and its member clinics are committed to developing a community-based system of accessible and affordable health care services that meet the needs of our diverse, multi-cultural community. In January 2008 our consortium received a $150,000  grant from Kaiser Permanente to implement a process of evaluation and planning leading to the development of a common vision for specialty care access among Santa Clara Valley Health & Hospital System (SCVHHS) and Community Health Centers (CHCs).  As the network of safety net providers, we have developed a culture and practice of collaboration with SCVHHS to improve the health care delivery system as patients move from a primary care setting to a specialty care setting and back to their medical home.  Click here to read more.

Governor’s Budget Proposal for Fiscal Year 2008-2009

As we enter the New Year, Governor Schwarzenegger declared a “Fiscal Emergency” which means that the State Senate and Assembly halts any hearings or voting on current  legislation until the budget crisis is resolved  and it must be done within 45 days.  The state of California has a $14.5 billion debt and the governor’s budget proposal slashes public and social services, closes parks and transportation projects, and many more services. The governor has proposed to cut $3.3 billion of the current fiscal budget 2007-2008 and work with the Senate and Assembly to cut the remaining $11.2 billion dollars of fiscal year 2008-2009’s budget in the regular session by cutting 10% across the board.  Click here to read more.

Update - Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts

The Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts (CDP:EWC) is a California Department of Public Health funded program designed to provide breast and cervical cancer public education and outreach, screening, follow-up diagnostic services, case management, and rescreening for low income uninsured and underinsured women in California. The local program recently hired a second Health Educator to extend its outreach into the region. Additionally, our CDP:EWC region has successfully completed two health education sessions in Santa Clara County reaching a total of 14 women. In the near future, our CDP:EWC program will also be recruiting and training community health workers to provide breast and cervical cancer health education out in the community.   Click here to read more.

Population Health Projects: Collaboration with Stanford

As a requirement of the “Practice of Medicine” course, Stanford medical students undertake population health projects in partnership with community groups.  These projects align with the population health curriculum, through which students learn the fundamentals of population health including determinants of health, health disparities, and the roles of physicians in advocacy.  Community partners, working with the Office of Community Health, have developed projects that both address community needs and provide students with an opportunity to build specific skills. The Partnership has been selected as a community partner, and as such medical students are collaborating with four of the Partnership’s programs (Policy, Clinical Activities, Women’s Health Partnership and Health Education Training Center) on their population health projects.  Click here to read more.

Healthy Futures 2008 Career Expo

Congratulations and special thanks to the Healthy Futures team for a great success at the Healthy Futures Career Expo for Andrew Hill High School's Medical Magnet Program and MACSA Academia Calmecac Charter High School students on Friday, February 8, 2008.  Eleven universities, colleges, and community health partners brought invaluable information to help diversify and open the pipeline to college and health careers for our students.    Click here to read more.

HIV/STD Services at the Clinics

Special thanks to all Community Health Partnership member clinics who participated in the 2007 Santa Clara County STD/HIV Clinic Service Assessment.  This assessment came only weeks after the Center for Disease Control released 2007 recommendations to standardize all HIV testing services in medical settings.  It was requested by member clinics seeking more information about who is doing what in the way of local HIV and STD services and therefore received a 100% response rate. In response, the Partnership’s HIV Services Department developed and implemented a needs assessment to determine the hours, locations, types of STD/HIV prevention, testing, and treatment services available, and costs of services.    Click here to read more.
