Text Box: Notes from the Partnership’s Wellness Committee…..

Did you know that ounce for ounce blueberries contain more antioxidants that any other fruit or vegetable?

Many foods contain an amazing amount of certain vitamins, minerals, or fiber for their size.

Most highly nutritious foods are very brightly or deeply colored. Use that as a guideline when shopping for and eating foods.

Some small foods that are big on nutrients:

spinach
eggs
tofu
sweet potatoes
broccoli
tomatoes
blueberries
flaxseeds
nuts

Pilot PHASE program to begin

PHASE (Preventing Heart Attacks and Strokes Everyday) is an evidence-based risk-reduction Strategy to prevent heart attacks and strokes in adults over the age of 55. PHASE has been implemented widely within the Kaiser Permanente system, and in some Community Health Clinics in the San Diego area. The Partnership has received a grant from Kaiser Permanente to pilot PHASE within our member clinics. The PHASE pilot will focus its initial efforts on two consortium members: Gardner Family Health Network (GFHN) and Ravenswood Family Health Center (RFHC).   Click here  to read more.

California budget finally passes

The California Constitution calls for a budget to be passed by June 15.  The Assembly adopted a $140 billion spending budget on July 20 that is supported by the Governor.  However, it failed by one vote in the Senate.  Republicans wanted deeper cuts and a fully balanced budget.   On August 21st, the California Senate approved a $145 billion budget for fiscal year 2007-2008 after two Republican senators provided the necessary votes to end the 52-day budget deadlock.  Click here to read more.

Partnership receives support from Kaiser Permanente to sustain Healthy Futures program

Kaiser Permanente of Northern California/San Jose awarded the Partnership $16,000 in support of the Healthy Futures program at Andrew Hill High School (AHHS).  With these funds, medical magnet students at AHHS will develop and implement culturally appropriate, multi-strategy, campus-wide health-education campaigns on diabetes prevention and nutrition.   AHHS students have seen the impact of diabetes on their families, and want to address it up front by focusing on the diabetes and obesity epidemics that are becoming increasing problems in the local community.  Click here to read more.
