San Jose AETC completed the clinic needs assessment of Community Health Partnership’s member clinics and other local HIV service providers in Q3. The assessment helped to determine the hours, locations, types of STD/HIV prevention and treatment services available, and costs of services. The directory is intended to be used as a referral source for providers and for underserved community members.

HIV Care & Prevention 2008 conference: Evolution of Health – Revolution of Care
Twenty-six years after the identification of the HIV virus, we as providers are now approaching prevention and treatment for HIV entirely differently. Out of the compassion and love for what we do, the health of our clients is evolving and our response needs to be progressive and revolutionary. Community Health Partnership, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, and the Santa Clara County Public Health Department teamed up to produce the third regional HIV Care & Prevention 2008 conference for the South Bay area on May 6th at the Double Tree Hotel in San José and to present this call to action to almost 250 physicians, nurses, behavioral health professionals, prevention specialists, and other health professionals.
The conference featured some of the leading experts in the field throughout the West Coast presenting updates on the hottest topics in HIV/AIDS care and prevention. Rhonda Smith Wright, Vice President of Programs & Services at the Partnership, welcomed attendees followed by an HIV Update in the South Bay Region, presented by Supriya Rao, Epidemiologist. A keynote address on “Evolution of Health – Revolution” was presented by Dr. Wilbert Jordan, Medical Director of the OASIS Clinic of King/Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles. Nine workshop sessions were available to choose from, whereas some of the highest attended sessions included:
- Breaking Barriers to Care: How Gender Identity Relates to Access
- A Shifting Crisis: When HIV is Hidden Behind the Now (on co-morbidities)
- Oral Sex, Drugs, and Piercing: Prevention & Care of HIV among Youth
With such great success underway, next year’s conference is already in the works, as well as several similar training opportunities throughout the year, for which CEUs will be available for physicians, pharmacists, and nurses. HIV Care & Prevention 2008 is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Santa Clara Convention Center.
